Tell us about your job

I am a forecasting hydrologist working with the national hydrological service. We analyse data models daily that represent all of Sweden’s land water, and in cases where there is a risk of high water flows and flooding, we issue warnings to the community and the public.

Since water moves in a cycle through the air, land, and sea, we constantly collaborate with other disciplines at SMHI, such as meteorologists and oceanographers who focus on sea water. Additionally, in warning situations, we work with the relevant county administrative boards and municipalities, as well as with MSB (the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency).

But we don’t just monitor Sweden’s water! SMHI is also responsible for the European hydrological warning service in collaboration with colleagues from Slovakia and the Netherlands. We are also part of a global warning service.

Another aspect of the job is continually developing our services and products, which is exciting!

Have you had different roles at SMHI?

Yes, I have worked as a consultant in hydrology and with the international climate training programmes that SMHI conducts for Africa on behalf of Sida. These are ambitious training programmes of about 5-6 weeks focusing on climate change and adaptation.

During this time, I worked closely with our participants, both on-site in Africa and when they came to our office in Norrköping. That experience has been life-changing for me, and I am very grateful for it.

What is the best part of working as a hydrologist?

I never have to ask myself why I am doing my job—it’s obvious. We perform a mission that is crucial for society. Working as a hydrologist in forecasting and warning services is also incredibly diverse, which I didn’t expect before I changed positions.

I am also energised and pleased by our ability to work closely with colleagues across borders throughout Europe.

What distinguishes SMHI as a workplace?

It feels great to represent SMHI; most people view us as an important and credible agency. We have a good reputation—both domestically and internationally—and I am proud to contribute to that.

I also feel “at home” at work due to all the friendly and helpful colleagues. It may sound like a cliché, but I truly mean it. Although I don’t have many workplaces to compare with, it’s something you shouldn’t take for granted.
