I work as a forecast meteorologist, which means I produce weather forecasts and communicate them in various ways. This can include written reports, radio broadcasts, phone calls to journalists, video recordings for our website and social media, and direct briefings with the recipient.
As a forecast meteorologist, I assess the most likely weather developments, and often it is just as interesting to explore the alternative scenarios. The weather and the atmosphere are complex, and communication between forecast meteorologists is part of the process to create the best possible forecast.
The forecast must then provide the weather information relevant to the recipient, whether it’s about whether it will be sunny or rainy in the afternoon or conveying a severe weather warning and what that entails.
Weather forecasts often serve as decision-making tools for both small and large decisions – from determining the best time for a run or what to wear in the morning, to preparing for a storm or deciding whether it’s safe to travel.
In addition to the forecasting work, I also handle other tasks, including development work, hosting visitors, and delving into specific meteorological phenomena.
What is the best part of being a forecast meteorologist?
I am fascinated by severe weather! Summer evenings when thunderstorms rumble and rain pours outside the window particularly excite me. The best part of the job is getting so close to these events, forecasting and talking about the weather.
The close contact with the recipients of forecasts makes my work enjoyable and exciting. I also feel that I am contributing to a safer society. Additionally, there is a charm in observing the seasons from a meteorological perspective and their progression throughout the year!
What is the best part of working at SMHI?
The best part is being able to access and contribute to all the information, technology, and expertise available here. This is a very educational and developing workplace. SMHI offers such a broad range of activities – from research and development to investigations and forecasting operations, which opens up many opportunities.
