Why did you become a software developer?

All my life, I have enjoyed creating, being creative, and solving complex problems. These three aspects are key reasons why I find it so exciting to work as a software developer at SMHI. Today, I build essential services that are used by both experts and the general public.

Tell us about your job!

I work in a development team focused on aviation services. The services we build are crucial for ensuring that air traffic in Sweden and Europe operates smoothly. Our users include SMHI’s aviation meteorologists, pilots, and air traffic controllers in multiple countries. Our main focus is to ensure that the systems are user-friendly and robust so that our users can concentrate on what really matters.

Within our development team, we work closely together to solve challenges. This means we share responsibility for the services we deliver while also leveraging each team member’s expertise. It’s incredibly rewarding to discuss and refine ideas with talented colleagues who bring new perspectives. Ultimately, this leads to higher-quality solutions.

Working as a software developer at SMHI comes with both great opportunities and significant responsibility in choosing the right technical solutions to solve different challenges. At SMHI, we believe in taking full ownership of a system from start to finish.

For us, this means building the entire delivery chain for a service ourselves and striving for small, fast releases whenever possible. Over the years, I have worked extensively with CI/CD in various forms and find it both important and insightful to push the boundaries of what is possible—even for critical public services.

What is the best part of being a software developer?

Having the opportunity to be creative every day, to build something from nothing that helps improve people’s daily lives. I particularly enjoy making complex information easier to understand and contributing to the creation of new services that enable other experts to work more effectively.

What is it like working at SMHI?

One of the great things about SMHI is the variety—it offers the chance to explore different technical solutions and work across multiple subject areas. I have previously worked with SMHI’s systems for maritime services, winter road maintenance, open data, climate services, fire risk forecasts, and much more. It has been a fantastic learning experience, giving me a deeper understanding of different societal functions and the opportunity to collaborate with subject matter experts both within and outside of SMHI.

SMHI is a great workplace where it’s easy to have an influence on your work. There is a high level of expertise and an openness to exploring new ways of doing things.

Above all, contributing to public benefit in different ways is truly inspiring.
