Tell us about your role!
Water affects everyone in their daily lives, and many also work on different types of water-related issues. Therefore, many use our hydrological information on smhi.se, and part of my job is to provide important information and ensure it is clear and easy to understand. For example, we have compiled information on historical floods in Sweden in a user-friendly manner.
Other tasks include answering various water-related enquiries, ranging from consultations from the government to questions from the public.
Additionally, there is always a special project underway. Currently, I am working on improving knowledge about Sweden's water withdrawals and developing a new management strategy for Vänern in collaboration with county administrative boards and Vattenfall.
What is the best part of working as a hydrologist?
Many projects are very important and concrete, such as developing a new management strategy for Vänern. There are many different interests affected by the lake's water level – including development, infrastructure, the natural environment, and shipping. My job has been to support the county boards and Vattenfall by calculating how different methods of regulating the lake impact the water level.
It is also gratifying to help individuals who call or email with direct questions. Most people are very appreciative of the help they receive. Today, I received a comment, "You’ve made my day!" after I provided someone with information from our Vattenwebb system.
What is the best part of the workplace?
There are so many knowledgeable and engaged people at SMHI with whom I collaborate, and I learn new things all the time. We have fun together!"
