I hold a degree in Environmental Engineering in Meteorological and Oceanographic Physics and a PhD in Environmental Science. Currently, I work in SMHI's research department focused on air quality. I work with the chemical transport model, MATCH, which analyses the composition of the atmosphere across Europe and Sweden.

About Ana

  • Job title: Air Quality researcher, Ph.D. and research leader.
  • Started working at SMHI: 2017

What is your job at SMHI? How long have you been employed at SMHI, and how long have you lived in Sweden?

My family and I moved to Sweden in January 2017 because I got a position at SMHI's research department. I work on regional air quality and support my colleagues with research activities involving the MATCH model. The results from this model are used in the daily forecast of atmospheric composition on a European scale.

What challenges did you encounter when you moved to Sweden?

There have been various challenges, both short-term and long-term. The short-term challenges were related to the difficulty of getting information on how the insurance system in Sweden works. The long-term challenge has been, and still is, the Swedish language. But people keep telling me "it will come." I hope so!

What is the best part of working at SMHI?

The people, and especially my colleagues! I belong to a very pleasant group that has helped me feel at home, both personally and professionally. The best part!

Is there anything you would like to advise someone who is about to move to Sweden?

It may take some time for your partner and children to feel as comfortable as you do. I think the best approach is to view what comes as opportunities to learn from, and Sweden offers various possibilities for this.
