Lena, field hydrologist at SMHI

About Lena

  • Job title: Field Hydrologist
  • Started at SMHI: 2009
  • Education: Master of Science in Environmental Water Engineering from Uppsala University

What does a typical day at your job look like?

One of my main tasks is maintaining the hydrological water level stations that are part of SMHI's basic network. Another task is measuring water flow at the stations to verify that the relationship between water level and flow is accurate.

We who work with hydrological field operations are based in Norrköping but have the whole of Sweden as our work area. Reviewing hydrological observation data is another task I have, and I also participate in a project to modernise the technology at all hydrological stations in Sweden.

What is the best part of your job?

My work involves a lot of travel across the country, which allows me to see places and meet people that I otherwise wouldn’t have. Working practically with hydrology in the field and more theoretically in the office is a variation that suits me well.

The technology for the instruments we use (ADCP) is rapidly developing, which means we have significant collaboration with foreign field hydrologists and agencies. We also frequently attend international training and workshops, which is particularly enjoyable.

Why did you start working at SMHI?

The job aligns well with my education and seemed very interesting and enjoyable. I have previously worked in the public sector and find that this role suits me well.
