How does a typical day at your job look?

Since I have a background as a weather forecaster, I start my day by reviewing the weather situation and discussing possible and alternative weather developments with the team on duty. After that, I usually spend some time going through and checking my inbox.

Most days include several meetings of varying lengths with different groups. Before the day ends, I try to participate in the handover between the meteorologists who worked the day shift and those taking over for the night shift.

What is the best thing about SMHI?

There are many knowledgeable and skilled employees here, with deep expertise across a wide range of natural science and technology fields.

What is the strangest thing you've experienced at work?

When I worked at SMHI Maritime about six or seven years ago, I was asked if I could help a mother whose son and his girlfriend were sailing around the world. She hadn't heard from them in a month and was worried. According to her calculations, they should have been in the Pacific Ocean, and she wondered what the weather had been like there recently.

I did my best to calmly explain and summarise the weather for her. I don't remember how she responded, but I know they made it home safely.
