About Jafet

  • Job title: Researcher in Hydrology
  • Started at SMHI: 2011
  • Education: PhD in Environmental Science from ETH Zurich

What do you work with?

I research hydrology, which involves studying water in soils, rivers, lakes, and streams. It's incredibly fascinating—water is central to all our lives, society, and nature. Since water issues touch almost everything, there are many aspects to explore!

Water can be both a blessing and a curse, as seen with droughts and floods. Flow patterns constantly change due to natural processes like seasons and weather, as well as human impacts such as irrigation, dam constructions, and climate change. Therefore, we need to understand, quantify, and try to predict water movements.

My research focuses on large-scale hydrological modelling, which means I am involved in building and developing data models of the water cycle.

What is the best part of the job?

The job is highly international, and I constantly collaborate with experts from both SMHI and other countries. Our shared goal is to improve the description of water dynamics and create services that benefit society, such as hydrological forecasting and warning systems globally.

Some projects have involved supporting low-income countries in Africa to build essential warning systems.

Is there any particular initiative that stands out for you?

One project that stands out was in Nigeria in 2020, where our forecasts helped save 2,500 people! These individuals were evacuated before a major flood, thanks to a system we had just managed to establish in collaboration with sister agencies in the region.
