SMHI is a Swedish expert authority with a global perspective and a vital mission to predict changes in weather, water, and climate.

SMHI plays a vital role as a reliable expert authority. Through our extensive knowledge of weather, water, and climate, we contribute to enhancing the sustainability of society as a whole.

SMHI is a government agency under the Ministry of Climate and Enterprise, with the mission to serve as an expert body in meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, and climatology. This means that we manage and develop information about weather, water, and climate, providing society's functions, businesses, and the public with knowledge and qualified decision-making support.

SMHI collaborates daily with authorities and organisations both in Sweden and internationally. We represent Sweden in several international organisations.

Concrete benefits for you and society

Around the clock, all year round, we provide the public and societal functions with forecasts and issue warnings during severe weather and water events.

SMHI also offers products and services that serve as important decision-making tools for Swedish authorities, organisations, and municipalities. This can range from weather forecasts for aviation or research assignments on air pollution to investigations and official statements

SMHI operates with forecasts and warnings around the clock, every day of the year. Forecasts and warnings are crucial decision-making tools for individuals and society.

Based on scientific principles

SMHI collects vast amounts of data, which we process, model, and visualise based on various scenarios. We monitor global developments and, through our own research, develop and disseminate knowledge and services grounded in scientific principles. We evaluate, analyse, forecast, and follow up every day, around the clock, throughout the year.

The foundation of our operations is constant observation, processing, and analysis of data about the atmosphere, lakes, seas, and land. We integrate this knowledge and understanding of natural and environmental connections with mathematical models, analyses, simulations, statistics, climate studies, and research.

SMHI is funded through grants, business activities, service exports, assignments, and contributions. The entire operation is based on the same fundamental principle: contributing to a sustainable society through knowledge.
