Cooperation
SMHI collaborates with numerous Swedish and international organisations for both daily operations and research and development activities.
In Sweden, SMHI works with other authorities and organisations on a range of issues, from emergency preparedness to environmental monitoring and climate adaptation. Key partners include County Administrative Boards, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management, the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB), and various universities.
For daily weather forecasting, SMHI also collaborates with the Swedish Air Navigation Service (LFV), the Swedish Armed Forces, and the Swedish Transport Administration. These partners provide SMHI with observational data, while SMHI provides them with tailored forecasts.
International satellite collaboration
Accurate weather forecasting requires extensive observational data and supercomputers for advanced calculations. Satellite and radar data are also crucial. European countries collaborate on various satellite programmes in which SMHI participates on behalf of Sweden. EUMETSAT, the European meteorological satellite organisation, monitors weather and climate from space. Sweden is a member state of EUMETSAT, and SMHI uses data from their fleet of Earth observation satellites. SMHI also operates its own network of observation stations and performs model calculations in collaboration with sister institutes in Norway, Finland, and Estonia. Additionally, SMHI utilises data from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF).
SMHI represents Sweden in various forums
International cooperation in meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, and climate is deepening, driven by the UN and the EU. SMHI represents Sweden in the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) and serves as the national contact point for the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). SMHI is also involved in the European Copernicus programme, which focuses on infrastructure development, such as satellites, and the joint development of analysis and forecasting models as well as decision-support services in weather, water, and climate.
SMHI is also engaged in bilateral environmental and climate collaborations with other countries, along with several other Swedish authorities.
