Atmospheric chemistry and air pollution models

Updated

Published

The research area includes development and improvement of SMHI's model system MATCH regarding atmospheric physical and chemical processes, with the aim of using the same model system on different scales – hemisphere, regional and urban background – as well as with chemistry and aerosol descriptions adapted to the problems being studied.

The spread, transformation and deposition of air pollutants affect climate, weather, ecosystems and people in many ways. Competence and well performing modelling systems are needed in atmospheric chemistry, e.g. to be able to study the sources and effects of air pollution, as well as provide support to other authorities with investigations, environmental monitoring, forecasting and preparedness models.

The main focus of the research area:

  • Research and model development in atmospheric chemistry, atmospheric particle formation, aerosol dynamics, emissions from anthropogenic and natural sources, and deposition of gases and particles
  • Operational modelling systems in the area of air pollution – air pollution forecasting and crisis/emergency preparedness models
  • Data assimilation of air chemistry measurements (gases and particulates) for improved air pollution forecasting and air pollution and deposition mapping
  • Further development of model systems for higher resolution (including urban areas and national forecasts)
  • Effects of air pollution (among other things on ecosystems and health)
  • Development and management of SMHI's model system MATCH (including quality assurance, evaluation, streamlining, documentation and competence assurance).
