The scientific method makes new knowledge reliable. Open access to our results, data and scientific papers allows society to quickly put the latest research to use.

Research is a planned, systematic and budgeted process based on original concepts and hypotheses. All research must have a significant novelty element and scientific or technical uncertainty must be eliminated.

Research results must be transferable or reproducible. We publish our results in peer-reviewed journals, preferably those that offer open access to research results. This means that anyone who wants to can access our results and use them in their work.

Our more development-oriented research uses research results, scientific knowledge and new ideas to create new products, services, methods, tools and models, or significant improvements to them.

SMHI researchers publish more than 100 scientific articles in international journals every year

Science underpins all of SMHI

SMHI's processes, tools and models are also developed with support from our research. The scientific approach must permeate all work at SMHI. Many of the services available on SMHI.se are based on data from the models we have developed through our research. For example, you can explore future climate in the Climate Scenario Service or investigate water issues using the hydrological model World-Wide HYPE. These services contain data from the models developed at SMHI's research department.
