CARRA2 – A new generation Copernicus pan-Arctic regional climate reanalysis
In 2021 Copernicus Climate Change Service released the dataset CARRA1, with a 30-year reanalysis of the Arctic climate (1991-2021). The CARRA dataset is now updated monthly, providing new data with three or fewer months latency. The second phase of the project has started, which will extend the dataset to cover the period from 1983-2025.
The production will be performed at the HPC facility of ECMWF in Bologna, and the contract includes configuration and testing of the reanalysis system, production and monitoring as well as evaluation, documentation, and user outreach.
SMHI will contribute to the development of the surface modules of the reanalysis system, and they will lead the work on assimilation setup and uncertainty estimation. SMHI will also contribute to the work on user guidance and support based on their experience from the C3S European regional reanalysis.
About the project
C3S is implemented by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) on behalf of the European Commission.
The CARRA2 contract is led by the Norwegian Meteorological Institute (MET Norway). The partners are the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI), the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI), the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS), the Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO), the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) and Météo-France (MF).
